The southern orientation of the new spaces
captures solar heat in the winter while operable openings eliminate the need for
summer air conditioning by allowing sea breezes to cross ventilate the space. We
used the form of a gazebo for the eating space, a glazed octagonal shape.
The addition also includes a new family room on the first floor, and a master
bedroom suite with decks looking out to the ocean on the second floor. An
existing dormer was redesigned to further accentuate the historic style of the
house.
