| The design
of the addition to this example of modern architecture uses
sustainable strategies and combines
the style and massing of the existing house to create a dynamic composition
of forms incorporating solar panels and green roofs as an
integral part of the whole.
The new design more than doubles the area of the existing house
with a new second floor and adds a great
deal of flexibility to the way spaces are used. The new house includes an
apartment, a home office, and an adult child’s room all with separate areas and
entrances. A new garage is strategically placed to screen the house from a noisy
adjacent street.
Sustainable strategies are employed in both the addition and the existing
structure and include:
-
Massing for optimal exposure to the sun.
-
Maximum use of existing layouts and materials.
-
A
tight new building envelope and tightening the existing one.
-
Adding
a wind lock at the main entry to minimize heat loss.
-
Maximum solar heat gain in winter and maximum
shade and ventilation in summer using strategically placed windows, solar
siphon panels, ventilation openings, and overhangs.
-
Use energy
efficient appliances and efficient
use of materials.
-
Minimize off-gasing from materials.
-
Use extensive green roofs planted with wild
flowers to increase plant diversity, minimize rain water run off and mitigate
noise.
