Located in downtown Lynn, this
industrial building has been converted into artist live / work loft spaces.
The three story concrete and brick
building has been added to with a fourth and fifth floor and covered over
with sprayed in place foam that is planned smooth and then coated with a
stucco finish. This technique unifies the new and the old and creates
a building envelope that is more energy efficient and comfortable for the
individual users. The existing industrial aesthetic is maintained by
expressing the columns on the exterior and leaving the floors and ceilings
exposed on the interior. The community of artists share common spaces such as the gallery, cafe and
rooftop sculpture garden. The rooftop also includes a common deck with
ocean views and areas for planting flowers.
This project is part of a new zoning change in Lynn that
allows the reclassification of industrial and commercial spaces into live /
work spaces. This project is seen as the cornerstone of a new and
revitalized Lynn attracting artists and businesses back into the otherwise
depressed downtown. |
